   # Keeping soil drilling samples safe with a smart app

TNO has conducted soil research since 1932. Dawn Technology developed a smart app to help TNO securely register, manage and protect valuable soil drilling samples stored at the Kernhuis in Soest.

**Discover**## Critical data, complex conditions

Large infrastructure and energy projects rely on detailed knowledge of soil conditions. TNO stores decades of soil drilling samples, each analysed and archived for future research. These samples are physically stored in dense wooden containers, stacked in racks.

The challenge was clear: enable staff to quickly add and update sample data, despite limited WiFi and VPN connectivity caused by the physical properties of the stored materials.

**Design & Development**## Reliable data capture, even without signal

We created a mobile app designed to function reliably in low-connectivity environments. Each soil drilling sample is identified by a unique barcode and scanned using a Bluetooth-based infrared scanner, which was seamlessly integrated into the app.

To overcome unreliable network coverage, smart synchronisation mechanisms were implemented. These ensure data is safely stored locally and synchronised with the central database once a connection becomes available. The app was designed to be intuitive and efficient, following Google’s Material Design guidelines. Users have clear insight into buffer status, synchronisation progress and scan task updates at all times.

**Conclusie**## Secure samples, simplified workflows

The app enables TNO employees to register and manage soil drilling samples quickly and reliably, regardless of connectivity constraints. By combining robust offline functionality with a clear interface, the solution protects valuable research data while making daily workflows more efficient and frustration-free.
