# ZLM Verzekeringen  Modernises Its Website with Dawn Technology as Digital Partner

ZLM Verzekeringen is known as a regional insurer that places customer satisfaction and quality at the heart of everything it does. The same philosophy applies to its digital presence. As customer expectations increasingly shifted towards convenience, speed and mobile-first experiences, ZLM decided to modernise its website and online services.

**Discovery**## A Modern Platform for a Modern Insurer

Several factors drove the decision to redesign and modernise the website. ZLM wanted a digital experience that better reflected the organisation's modern identity while providing a fully responsive experience across all devices. In addition, the insurer wanted to manage all content through a single CMS and expand its online services by offering more insurance products digitally in a smarter, more accessible and customer-friendly way.

The existing technical foundation was also becoming outdated, making it increasingly difficult to support new functionality and future growth.

During the selection process, ZLM invited two development partners to demonstrate how they would technically implement critical e-commerce functionality, including premium calculations and online insurance applications.

**Design & development**## Smart Integrations and Close Collaboration

The new platform was built on Drupal, complemented by custom-developed functionality to connect complex premium calculations directly with back-office systems. A dedicated web services layer acts as the bridge between the front-end and internal systems, ensuring that data is processed securely, consistently and efficiently.

### Security by Design

Security was a key focus throughout the project. The resulting platform underwent an external security audit and received only a handful of minor recommendations, confirming the robustness of the solution.

### Agile Delivery and Team Alignment

The project was delivered using an Agile/Scrum approach, closely aligning with ZLM’s own internal processes and working methods. Throughout the project, it became increasingly clear how closely connected front-office and back-office processes are. By encouraging stronger collaboration between teams and organising shared demonstrations, greater transparency, alignment and ownership emerged across the organisation.

Dawn Technology also played an active role in managing scope and priorities, ensuring that new ideas and evolving requirements did not compromise project objectives.

Even seemingly small details received careful attention, including:

- Shopping cart interactions
- Error messages
- Edge cases and exception handling
- User journey optimisation

This meticulous approach ensured that customers always experience a clear, intuitive and logical process.

The new website represents a significant step forward for ZLM Verzekeringen. The platform is modern, user-friendly, logically structured and fully optimised for mobile devices. Its technical architecture is also prepared for future enhancements, including personalisation capabilities that will allow customers to receive increasingly relevant information and services.

The project delivered benefits internally as well. Hosting was outsourced to a specialised provider, resulting in greater stability and a reduced management burden for ZLM’s IT department. We worked closely and transparently with the hosting partner throughout the project, reflecting the collaborative and quality-focused culture that defines ZLM.
