Newsrooms are under enormous pressure. The rise of deepfakes and AI-generated content is making the fight against misinformation more complex than ever. The public demands reliability, but how can you quickly and conclusively verify the authenticity of images and sources amid the daily hustle and bustle of a newsroom?

In this technical paper, we present a scalable methodology for embedding C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) provenance metadata directly into the workflows of broadcasters and news organizations. Because standard solutions for digital identities often fall short, this architecture successfully combines C2PA with the technical standard of the CAWG (Creator Assertions Working Group).

The theory presented in this paper is directly linked to practice. In collaboration with Media Campus NL, we developed this solution and successfully implemented it for the VPRO program Tegenlicht. To lower the barrier to entry for the rest of the media industry, the code we developed has been made fully available as open source.

What will you learn from this paper?

  • Architecture & Implementation: How the C2PA and CAWG frameworks are technically integrated, including the use of our independent verification platform, verifieermij.nl.
  • Practical Experiences: The challenges, solutions, and initial operational findings from the live pilot at VPRO Tegenlicht.
  • Digital Identities: Why strong, cryptographically verifiable identities are crucial for trust in the media and how to implement this technically.
  • Open-Source Approach: How other media organizations can use our open-source solutions via GitHub to strengthen their own journalistic integrity.

Who is this technical paper intended for?

This publication is written for professionals in the media, journalism, and tech sectors who deal with content integrity and digital innovation. It offers a valuable technical blueprint for CTOs, software architects, and IT managers seeking scalable solutions for content authenticity, and serves as a practical guide for media engineers and developers who want to get started with open-source standards right away. Editor-in-chiefs, innovation managers, and security officers who want to future-proof editorial processes and publishing tools against the threat of deepfakes will also find immediately applicable insights here.
