Scale demands control

Mediahuis manages a large and diverse media landscape consisting of national and regional titles. Video plays an increasingly important role within that ecosystem. While the existing video player fulfilled its functional requirements, it lacked the flexibility and level of control needed within their own player ecosystem.

The ambition was clear: a future-proof player solution, fully configurable from one central platform, suitable for all brands, browsers, and devices, while remaining easy to further develop over time.

Design & development

From player to platform

We delivered the migration to VideoJS within the AgnoPlay framework: Mediahuis’ central video player service that serves approximately 250 million views every month.

The team developed a technical bridge that allows VideoJS to be fully controlled and configured from within AgnoPlay. In addition, an agnostic plug-in system was introduced, enabling existing player functionality to be flexibly replaced or extended. To ensure optimal mobile performance, native SDKs were developed for both iOS and Android.

The project also included implementing the new player skin based on Mediahuis’ supplied design, extensive cross-browser testing, and scrum-based project management.

Conclusie

Flexible, scalable and future-proof

With the transition to VideoJS, Mediahuis now has maximum control over its video player component. AgnoPlay has become fully independent, easily extensible, and ready for future innovation. The result is a stable, scalable, and visually consistent video experience across all brands within the Mediahuis group.

At Mediahuis, we developed an agnostic player service called AgnoPlay. AgnoPlay enables us to deploy and maintain an unlimited number of players with different configurations from one central point. Until recently, we used an off-the-shelf product, THEOplayer, as the player component within AgnoPlay. It was an excellent video player that served us well for many years. However, we were looking for a solution that would give us more control over the player component. That ultimately led us to choose the open-source solution VideoJS, the video player with the largest footprint in the world.

To develop a player based on VideoJS that would fully meet our requirements, we were looking for a partner who could support us in that process. Based on previous experiences and proven quality, we eventually chose Dawn Technology. They have repeatedly demonstrated that they are specialists in this field. On top of that, they are simply an incredibly pleasant team to work with, continuously anticipating my needs as a client.
