   # Eight Stations. One Smart App Platform.

NPO Radio reaches millions of listeners every day with news, sports and music. As the demand for audience interaction continued to grow, NPO sought a future-proof digital solution. Dawn Technology developed a suite of channel-specific apps that give each station its own identity while running on a single scalable platform.

**Discovery**## Diverse Audiences, One Technical Challenge

Each NPO radio station serves a completely different audience. From classical music to hip-hop, and from news and current affairs to sports and entertainment, every channel has unique requirements, content formats and user expectations.

The challenge was to create a single technical solution that could feel entirely different for each station without building and maintaining eight separate applications.

At the same time, the platform needed to support:

- Live radio streaming
- Video content
- Podcasts
- Playlists
- Audience interaction
- Special campaigns and events such as Top 2000 and Serious Request

An additional layer of complexity came from the fact that several stations were simultaneously migrating to new backend systems. The apps needed to continue functioning seamlessly throughout these transitions without listeners noticing any disruption.

**Design & development**## Smart Reuse Without Compromising the Experience

Dawn Technology developed eight native applications for iOS and Android based on a single shared codebase:

- NPO Radio 1
- NPO Radio 2
- NPO 3FM
- NPO Radio 4
- NPO Radio 5
- FunX
- NPO Soul & Jazz
- NPO Sterren NL

Each application received its own visual identity, branding and functionality tailored to its audience.

Features include:

- Live radio streams with studio video
- Podcasts and personalised playlists
- Direct interaction with presenters and studios

The shared codebase connects all applications to the central backend CMS and contains reusable modules for functionality such as podcast playback and audience engagement.

At the same time, individual stations retain complete freedom to add temporary campaigns, event-driven functionality and station-specific features. A good example is the annual Top 2000 event within the NPO Radio 2 application.

### Built for the Future

The platform was engineered with long-term flexibility and maintainability in mind.

Key architectural decisions included:

- Abstracted backend integrations, allowing backend systems to be replaced without requiring app updates
- Automated testing across all applications simultaneously
- Centralised bug fixes that are immediately available across the entire app portfolio

We also designed the platform around multiple user scenarios.

Some users simply listen to live radio. Others use the app alongside traditional radio listening at home, accessing track information, interacting with presenters or participating in station activities.

All these experiences were brought together within a single, stable and intuitive platform.

**Conclusion**## One Platform, Maximum Impact

With one shared technical foundation, NPO Radio now operates eight fully independent applications, each with its own identity, audience and functionality.

The result:

- Lower development and maintenance costs
- Faster feature development
- Immediate scalability
- A stable listening experience for millions of users

Listeners never notice the complexity operating behind the scenes.

And that is exactly when technology is at its best.
