   # CRUSE Control app: reliable AI Answers

CRUSE Control is the reference self-evaluation app for chronic urticaria, built by Dawn Technology together with the Charité Institute of Allergology and the international UCARE network. Over 20,000 patients across 38 countries use the application daily to track symptoms and prepare for clinic visits. Dawn Technology integrated a reliable AI assistant into the app to safely and accurately answer patient questions based exclusively on approved medical sources.

**Discovery**## Trustworthy answers between appointments

Between clinical appointments, patients have questions about their disease. They want to know what their symptoms mean or whether antihistamines are safe during pregnancy. Without immediate access to a physician, they turn to generic search engines or AI chatbots. However, these systems frequently invent answers, ignore clinical context, and fail to cite trustworthy sources. For a medical audience that requires reliability and clarity, this is unusable and unsafe. CRUSE required an in-app Q&A system that patients could rely on: plain-language answers grounded strictly in approved medical documents, never the open internet, with the source always visible.

**Design & development**## AI RAG integration via 'The Knowledge'

Dawn Technology developed an AI RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) capability inside CRUSE Control, powered by our white-label platform 'The Knowledge'. Patients type a question the way they would ask a nurse. The system retrieves the most relevant passages exclusively from the closed, scientific board-approved CRUSE knowledge base. Replies are written in clear, everyday language rather than clinical jargon. Every answer links directly to its source document, so patients can read the original text and trust where it came from. If the approved documents lack an answer, the assistant explicitly states this rather than guessing: no source, no answer. Because a patient-facing medical assistant is regulated, the build is compliant by design. Independent guardrails check safety and red-flag escalation, ensuring clinically meaningful actions stay with the physician. All data is hosted and processed within the EU with full audit trails, strictly adhering to GDPR, the EU AI Act, the MDR, NEN 7510, and ISO 27001. Dawn Technology is certified to ISO 13485, 9001, 27001, and 14001, backed by a dedicated QA, security, privacy, and [Regulatory Services](https://dawn.tech/en/specialism/regulatory-services) team.

**Conclusie**## A safe extension of a trusted app

Patients receive reliable, understandable guidance about their own disease right when they need it, with the source one tap away. This results in better-informed patients and fewer avoidable questions at the clinic. For CRUSE and Charité, this provides a working, scalable extension to a trusted app with demonstrably safe handling of medical data, not a loose AI experiment. Furthermore, it acts as a reusable building block across the UCARE network and other diseases. Dawn Technology and [Charité Berlin](https://www.charite.de/en/) are currently testing the system and assessing its regulatory status, including classification under the EU AI Act and MDR, to ensure a responsible rollout before any patient-facing use.
