3D Measurement Application for Defence: Groenendijk Chooses Custom Software by Dawn Technology

Groenendijk Workwear supplies workwear and personal protective equipment to large organisations across the Benelux. When the Dutch Ministry of Defence commissioned the company to provide new combat boots for more than 45,000 military personnel and reservists, Groenendijk needed an efficient, accurate and scalable solution. Dawn Technology developed an advanced 3D foot measurement application: a digital platform that ensures every soldier receives the perfect fit while streamlining the entire ordering process.

From Manual Processes to Digital Precision

The Defence contract presented a significant logistical challenge. Thousands of military personnel needed to be measured for new combat boots within a limited timeframe, while still being able to choose from different boot models and fit options.

Groenendijk wanted to modernise the process completely. Instead of relying on manual registration and error-prone workflows, the goal was to create a fully integrated digital solution that would automate every step, from foot measurements to order processing.

The company therefore looked for a partner capable of developing in PHP/Laravel, delivering an initial version within three months and collaborating closely with its internal development team. Dawn Technology was selected because of its technical expertise, pragmatic approach and strong cultural fit built around craftsmanship and creativity.

Design & development

Smart Technology, Seamless User Experience

Together with Groenendijk, we designed and developed an entirely new web application. The backend was built in Laravel and integrated with several business-critical systems, including Exact. The frontend was designed to be modern, intuitive and fully aligned with Groenendijk’s visual identity.

The application communicates directly with a 3D foot scanner located inside the mobile fitting trailer. As soon as a soldier’s feet are scanned, the measurement data is automatically transferred into the application. The measurements are then combined with preferences regarding boot type and model, depending on the user’s role or mission requirements.

Smart validation mechanisms and an additional verification step minimise the risk of data-entry errors.

One of the most important technical challenges involved so-called "split sizing" scenarios, where a person requires different shoe sizes for their left and right foot. We developed custom logic that automatically identifies and processes these cases. With a single selection, both sizes are recorded, allowing the correct pair of boots to be located instantly among hundreds of available combinations.

The project was delivered using an agile methodology with two-week sprints, enabling close collaboration between us, Groenendijk and the Ministry of Defence. Within the required timeframe, a stable and fully functional application was successfully deployed, both in the mobile fitting trailer and in the shop-in-shop location in Soesterberg.

Conclusie

Digitalisation with Immediate Impact

With the new 3D foot measurement application, Groenendijk Workwear has elevated its service offering for the Ministry of Defence. Military personnel receive correctly fitting boots faster and more accurately, while Groenendijk benefits from streamlined operations and error-free data processing.

The collaboration with Dawn Technology delivered more than just an innovative software solution. It created a sustainable digital foundation that supports future innovation throughout the organisation.

As Project Coordinator Leendert Oosterom summarised: “The most impressive application running within our company.”
