The EU’s European Digital Identity (EDI) initiative aims to give every EU citizen access to a secure digital identity wallet within the next few years. On behalf of ICTU, we are working on a Dutch prototype for the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) that can serve as a European example.
With its own digital wallet, the Netherlands seeks to positively influence the development of the European wallet. This is primarily to ensure that the digital tool meets strict privacy and security requirements.
The wallet allows citizens to demonstrate, for example, that they have a driver's license, are over eighteen, or have a diploma. The principle is that citizens share a minimal amount of data when demonstrating this. This allows you to prove that you are over eighteen without revealing your date of birth. By applying privacy and security by design, we’re immediately raising the bar at the European level.
This project contributes to the Ministry of BZK’s Value-Driven Digitalization agenda. Which ensures that digital transformation happens responsibly, protecting citizens’ rights and guaranteeing that everyone can participate.
Vitens is the largest drinking water company in the Netherlands. Every day, the company provides nearly six million customers with tap water that meets the highest quality standards. We developed software that enables Vitens to analyze and report lab results efficiently and accurately.
Within the ICT cooperative SURF, universities, universities of applied sciences, vocational colleges, university hospitals, and research institutions collaborate to purchase and develop digital services. We are a permanent development partner for SURF.
