Designing these displays is a complex process that requires continuous collaboration between design studios, brand managers and production teams. The existing workflow relied heavily on separate files, manual revisions and extensive back-and-forth communication. This resulted in delays, inefficiencies and inconsistencies throughout the design process. Smurfit Kappa wanted a future-proof solution: a digital configurator that could bring every stage of the design process together in a single platform, connect relevant product data and provide an intuitive experience for all stakeholders. A key driver behind the project was the desire to improve collaboration not only during the design phase but throughout the entire lifecycle of the product. **Design & development**## A 3D Configurator That Makes Collaboration Easier We developed a cloud-based configurator that imports 3D models directly from ArtiosCAD and enriches them with flat artwork that can be applied directly to the display model. The solution uses: - three.js for advanced 3D visualisation - PhysicsJS to create a smooth and realistic interactive 3D environment Every element within the configurator can be manipulated through an intuitive drag-and-drop interface, allowing design teams to rapidly create variations while enabling brand managers to review changes in real time. Because the platform is cloud-based, all stakeholders work from the same version of the design, whether they are located in the same office or on opposite sides of the world. Beyond design functionality, the configurator automatically generates and connects additional product information. Procurement details, material specifications and production data are directly linked to the digital product, ensuring all relevant information remains complete and up to date throughout the process. **Conclusion**## Efficient Collaboration from Design to Production One of the most significant outcomes of the project is the fully automated Co-Packer's Manual. Previously, generating this documentation was a time-consuming manual process. Today, the manual is automatically created as soon as a design is completed, enabling a seamless handover between design studios, customers and production teams. This automation alone delivers a time saving of at least 30%. The configurator provides a single environment where design, product data and collaboration come together. As a result, Smurfit Kappa now benefits from a scalable solution that supports its global operations and helps deliver a more efficient, consistent customer experience.
