Vitens’ laboratory analyzes large quantities of samples every day to ensure water quality. The existing system was no longer sufficient. Since 2023, we have been working with Vitens to develop a future-proof software system for water analysis. This collaboration enables Vitens to respond more quickly to new analytical methods and allows the company to remain at the forefront of water quality and safety.
Vitens was looking for a robust solution capable of processing large volumes of results, meeting strict quality requirements, and scaling with new analytical methods. Examples include target screening, which specifically searches for known substances, and non-target screening: unbiased analysis of what is actually present in the water.
We have been working with Vitens since 2023 on a phased rebuild of the system. We began with a comprehensive analysis of all processes and use cases within the lab. Based on this, we developed a scalable application that reads, evaluates, verifies, and reports on the results exported by the measuring equipment. The system was expanded method by method, allowing the lab to remain operational while we carried out the upgrade step by step.
The core functionality focuses on the so-called “targets.” This is a defined set of approximately 1,500 known substances for which checks and statistical processing are applied.
For non-target screening, the software compares measurement results with national and international databases and identifies potential matches based on retention time and exact mass. This makes it possible to identify unknown substances (non-target screening) as well.
Starting in 2025, the system will be phased in, with room for continuous optimization.
Thanks to this joint effort, Vitens now has a flexible platform that evolves to meet tomorrow’s demands and helps build confidence in clean drinking water for millions of Dutch people. Measurement results are processed faster, more consistently, and more reliably, and new analysis methods can be easily added.
The impact is immediately noticeable: faster insight into water quality and better assurance of safety. For millions of Dutch people, this means something that seems self-evident, clean drinking water from the tap, but which behind the scenes requires technology that always works.
