The Efteling welcomes millions of visitors each year to a world of fantasy and fairytales. Dawn Technology developed the Efteling app to help guests make the most of their visit through real-time waiting times and smart ride reservations.

More visitors, longer queues, less magic

With growing visitor numbers year after year, waiting times at The Efteling’s most popular attractions increased significantly. Long queues directly reduce the number of rides guests can experience in a single day, which impacts overall visitor enjoyment.

The Efteling wanted to actively guide visitors through the park using real-time information. Guests needed insight into current waiting times for all attractions and the ability to respond instantly to changing crowd dynamics. In addition, highly popular rides, such as the Python rollercoaster, required a smarter queueing solution to prevent extreme congestion and improve flow through the park.

Design & Development

Real-time data and smart time-slot management

Dawn Technology developed the Efteling app as a real-time companion for visitors throughout the park. The app continuously displays current waiting times for all attractions, enabling guests to choose the shortest queue and optimise their route through the park.

Visitors can also activate notifications for specific attractions. When the waiting time drops below a predefined threshold, the app immediately alerts the user, allowing them to time their visit perfectly without standing in line unnecessarily.

To further reduce congestion at the Python rollercoaster, we introduced the Boarding Pass as part of the app. This feature allows visitors to reserve a dedicated time slot for the ride, dramatically reducing the physical queue to a maximum waiting time of fifteen minutes. Since its launch, the Boarding Pass has continuously evolved. Time slots were expanded to offer more flexibility, visitor distribution was further optimised and overlapping slots were prepared to improve flow even more. The Boarding Pass remains in active development to continuously improve the park experience.

Behind the scenes, the platform requires constant real-time updates of attraction availability and queue data. This demands flawless integration with park operations and continuous data synchronisation to keep information accurate for every single visitor.

The Efteling app transformed queue management into a real-time, visitor-focused experience. Guests now move through the park more efficiently, experience more attractions and spend less time waiting. The Boarding Pass further improved flow at one of the park’s most popular rides, directly increasing overall visitor satisfaction.

The result is a digital layer on top of a world of wonders that strengthens the magic instead of interrupting it, proving how real-time technology can directly elevate large-scale visitor experiences.
